I'd recommend AGAINST taking the "Allay Trail" - it's beautiful and has groves of 40 trees (for each of the victims), but it's LONG (over 1 mile), and you have to hike back up the hill. You can also see the site (through a gate) where the plane crashed (marked by a large boulder that only the families can access).Īfterwards, you can drive down to the bottom of the hill and there's another area where the Park Rangers give presentations and you can leave flowers or messages for these fallen heroes. Once at the memorial, I'd recommend going to the Visitor's Center first (which can take a lot of time if there's a crowd and if you want to view each of the exhibits), and then to the "Wall of Names" which is down one of the hills. Otherwise, I would have had to stop and rest (and rehydrate). I only was 30 minutes away from my ultimate destination and was glad that the memorial was so close. There is a LOT of walking/standing involved at the Flight 93 Memorial as well. The memorial itself is on the edge of town on US 30 - it's actually in Stoystown - although Shanksville is the nearest "big" town. There are signs directing you to the site, but I'd program your GPS because, once you're OFF the Turnpike, the GPS will get you there faster than the signs (which take you through the town of Shanksville - and is much longer). The Flight 93 Memorial is best accessed via the PA Turnpike.
